We’ve done the Gibb River Road – and could do it a9th Aug 2008
We have just spent a week travelling along the Gibb River Road and WOW what a fantastic experience!
Being in the heart of the Kimberley was magical and we would certainly like to come back again as we’re sure there is still more to see. The road was fine (slightly bumpy at times) and the views were spectacular. Rich red cliff faces jutting out of nowhere full of hidden gorges, waterfalls and crystal clear swimming holes. We spent a few days at El Questro Gorge, including Emma Gorge – both were gorgeous!. We then went onto Manning Gorge and then Bell Gorge followed by Windjana Gorge before reaching Broome. Manning Gorge was a favourite (see sixth week pictures Jamie diving into the water) and we now know that we should have spent more days there. We also would have spent more time at El Questro Gorge, as our own private campsite by the Pentecost river was great (Jamie caught 6 fish and we ate 2) and there were more gorges and tracks to explore in the area. Windjana Gorge was also a highlight also as we walked beside about 70 freshwater crocodiles (only a few metres away) while they basked in the afternoon sun. So when you see the photo (sixth week) of me and with the crocodile behind, it is not trick photography, I was kneeling on my knees and the crocodile was right behind me! (Sorry Mum!)
We are now hanging out in Broome, restocking and getting ready to go to beautiful Cape Lévesque for more R and R. We hope to see more of the Kimberley on the way back to Kununurra. In particular, Tunnel Creek, Geikie Gorge and the Bungle Bungles. Cheers and thanks for all of your messages. Keep them coming as we love them. They help us not miss home too much!
